I think this bears repeating; so I shall.
The scripture most blurted out is two words – “Judge not.” Matt 7:1
It seems to me there is much more to it than that.
The New Living Translation says it this way – Matt 7:1-5 Do not judge others, and you will not be judged. For you will be treated as you treat others. The standard you use in judging is the standard by which you will be judged.
And why worry about a speck in your friend’s eye when you have a log in your own?
How can you think of saying to your friend, ‘Let me help you get rid of that speck in your eye,’ when you can’t see past the log in your own eye?
Hypocrite! First get rid of the log in your own eye; then you will see well enough to deal with the speck in your friend’s eye.
I understand this to mean that judgment will produce judgment; standard to standard.
In other words, how can I tell you that adultery is a sin and you are doing wrong if I am doing it myself?
This is why I must judge myself first. Sometimes I need the help of others so that I can realize that I am sinning against God. That is, they judge me by the standard of Jesus Christ.
The penitent person will seek to right themselves with God.
The scripture continues to say that once the “log” is out of your own eye, you’ll be able to see clearly enough to help someone with the speck in their eye.
How would you help someone with something in their eye?
Would you go after a speck of dirt with a spoon?
No! Either you would get a tissue or something and gently try to remove it or you might take them to a doctor to remove it.
And so our judgment should be tempered with gentleness and love.
If we truly have the mind of Christ then we are not here to condemn one another but to love and help each other find the way to Father!
