knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law but by faith in Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, that we might be justified by faith in Christ and not by the works of the law; for by the works of the law no flesh shall be justified.
I remember running across this verse in the late 1970’s. Back then I thought it didn’t have a lot of relevance for today, unless I ran across a Jew following the Law of Moses.
My thought has changed since then.
There are some Christians seeking to following portions of the Law, which is their personal preference, but this verse says that adherence cannot and will not justify them.
So why do it?
Later on Paul will say you are a debtor to keep the whole Law.
Jesus is the only one ever to completely follow the Law. He was sinless.
Yet it was the Law that condemned and cursed Him, as it is written, for he who is hanged [on a tree] is accursed of God. Deut 21:23/Gal 3:13
Belief in Jesus justifies us by faith and not by the Law.
Is this an excuse to do evil because you are justified by faith?
Certainly not! How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it? Rom 6:2
Christ gives you the liberty to do good!
