This morning I found myself doing some more research on The Name.
It is Strong’s number 8034, if you are interested, and that is used all over the Old Testament beginning with Gen 2:4 where the name of the second river is Gihon;
The real name of God seems to be centered around 4 Hebrew letters, YHWH, and is pronounced Yahweh, which is probably wrong.
It is also where we get an English word for God.
It seems the Hebrews didn’t want to accidentally say God’s name and violate the 4th Commandment; You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain. Ex 20:7 (which contains Strong’s 8034)
There were no vowel points in YHWH but those from the Hebrew word for Lord – adonai – were added to remind Jews to say Adonai instead of YHWH.
Thus intermingled in the letters were the vowels “a” “o” and “a”.
The English translators didn’t know this and thus wrote YaHoWaH or Jehovah.
The many names that are used for God are more titles.
My name is Tim but I am called Dad, Gampy, Gamps, Pastor, and a few little personal pet names by Linda that I won’t go into.
Jesus made it more intimate by calling God “My Father”.
It portrays the relationship of a dad to his children.
What we miss is the boldness the apostles had in using the name of Jesus.
They didn’t throw it around carelessly like we often do, but used the Name in the fullness of God’s will and power.
Then Peter said, “Silver and gold I do not have, but what I do have I give you: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk.” Acts 3:6
But when they believed Philip as he preached the things concerning the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, both men and women were baptized. Acts 8:12
But Paul, greatly annoyed, turned and said to the spirit, “I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her.” And he came out that very hour. Acts 16:18
The whole purpose of using the name of Jesus?
That the name of our Lord Jesus Christ may be glorified in you, 2 Thess 1:12
And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him. Col 3:17
