The Day Of Darkness

The time was the 19th of May, 1780.
The place was Hartford, Connecticut.
The day has gone down in New England history as a terrible foretaste of Judgment Day.
For at noon the skies turned from blue to gray and by mid-afternoon had blackened over so densely that, in that religious age, men fell on their knees and begged a final blessing before the end came. Diaries of the preceding days mention smoky air and a red sun at morning and evening. Around noon this day, an early darkness fell: Birds sang their evening songs, farm animals returned to their roosts and barns, and humans were bewildered.
Some went to church, many sought the solace of the tavern, and more than a few nearer the edges of the darkened area commented on the strange beauty of the preternatural half-light. One person noted that clean silver had the color of brass.
In the darkest area, people had to take their midday meals by candlelight. A Massachusetts resident noted, “In some places, the darkness was so great that persons could not see to read common print in the open air.”
The Connecticut House of Representatives was in session. And as some men fell down and others clamored for an immediate adjournment, the Speaker of the House, one Colonel Davenport, came to his feet.
He silenced them and said these words: “The Day of Judgment is either approaching or it is not. If it is not, there is no cause for adjournment. If it is, I choose to be found doing my duty. I wish, therefore, that candles may be brought.”
But you, brethren, are not in darkness, so that this Day should overtake you as a thief. 1 Thess 5:4
Let’s not be fooled by the coming of the Day but let’s be prepared and waiting; not on a mountainside looking toward the heavens but in the service of the Lord Jesus.

  1. Indeed such a time would be scary if it were not for the knowledge our Lord gives us. Have you noticed how media- movies give their answers to such exstordenary events? And how man can come up with a sulation just in time? Are they in for a big suprise! Thank God He gives us understanding.
