Then the devil took Him up into the holy city, set Him on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down. For it is written: ‘He shall give His angels charge over you,’ and, ‘In their hands they shall bear you up, Lest you dash your foot against a stone.'” Matt 4: 5-6
Satan will tempt you in your own place.
He took Jesus to Jerusalem, God’s own Holy City!
And to top it off, he took Him to the temple, which was God’s house of worship.
You are not safe any where on the planet from the temptation of Satan.
Then Satan will tempt you with what you believe God’s word says.
It sounds biblical and so must be the truth.
Remember this, He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it. John 8:44
Satan cannot speak the truth, even in scripture.
If he quotes from scripture it’s for his benefit, not yours!
How many actually know where that scripture is from and what it says?
It is Psalm 91; Because you have made the LORD, who is my refuge, Even the Most High, your dwelling place, No evil shall befall you, Nor shall any plague come near your dwelling; For He shall give His angels charge over you, To keep you in all your ways. In their hands they shall bear you up, Lest you dash your foot against a stone.
It seems Satan omitted some key words to keep the scripture in context; like I said, his benefit, not yours!
Jesus answer to him was not to “prove Himself” but to end it with God’s word; Jesus said to him, “It is written again, ‘You shall not tempt the LORD your God.'”
Again this comes from Deuteronomy and stopped Satan in his tracks.
But he is not through because the devil walks about like a roaring lion , seeking whom he may devour (1 Peter 5:8) and the accuser of our brethren, who accused them before our God day and night (Rev 12:10), which means he is relentless and never stops.
He continues to tempt, bad mouth, point the finger, and accuse you!
And so he will return to Jesus and we shall learn another lesson from it.
