“Then the kingdom of heaven shall be likened to ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom. Now five of them were wise, and five were foolish. Those who were foolish took their lamps and took no oil with them, but the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps. But while the bridegroom was delayed, they all slumbered and slept.
“And at midnight a cry was heard: ‘Behold, the bridegroom is coming; go out to meet him!’ Then all those virgins arose and trimmed their lamps. And the foolish said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.’ But the wise answered, saying, ‘No, lest there should not be enough for us and you; but go rather to those who sell, and buy for yourselves.’ And while they went to buy, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went in with him to the wedding; and the door was shut.
“Afterward the other virgins came also, saying, ‘Lord, Lord, open to us!’ But he answered and said, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, I do not know you.’
Watch therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour in which the Son of Man is coming. Matt 25:1-13
I woke up this morning with this story/scripture on my mind and heart.
As we get closer to Yom Teruah (Feast of Trumpets) and with the prospect of Jesus returning in a few weeks, this scripture becomes very important.
Though Jesus starts out with “the kingdom of heaven shall be like…” He ends it with a statement about His return.
Is this a trick to those that didn’t believe He was Messiah?
Not likely since He began the whole discourse in chapter 24; Now as He sat on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to Him privately, saying, “Tell us, when will these things be? And what will be the sign of Your coming, and of the end of the age?” Matt 24:3
Jesus is talking to His disciples that did believe He was Messiah.
I don’t understand the lack of excitement at the prospect of Jesus returning. Do we not believe it or we’re just not sure what we should be doing with this information….I believe if we thought it was really possible for him to return in 3 weeks then what would we be doing differently……Have we really gotten so busy that we have put Jesus aside too? I’m just thinking out loud…………
