And while they went to buy, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went in with him to the wedding; and the door was shut.
“Afterward the other virgins came also, saying, ‘Lord, Lord, open to us!’ But he answered and said, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, I do not know you.’
“Watch therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour in which the Son of Man is coming. Matt 25:10-13
What did the foolish virgins go to buy?
More oil so they could make it to the wedding.
It seems they were attempting to do a good thing but it’s a day late and a dollar short.
I’m reminded of another scripture when I read what they said at the door; “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven. Many will say to Me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?’ And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!’ Matt 7:21-23
Notice the similarities of “Lord, Lord” and “I don’t know you.”
Could the foolish be the pretentious ones, playing a game of church, having a form of godliness but denying its power? 2 Tim 3:5
It appears for them that there is no second chance at redemption; the door is shut and they are outside.
Regardless they are caught unaware and the warning is for each of us to WATCH THEREFORE!
“Let your waist be girded and your lamps burning; and you yourselves be like men who wait for their master, when he will return from the wedding , that when he comes and knocks they may open to him immediately. Blessed are those servants whom the master, when he comes, will find watching. Assuredly, I say to you that he will gird himself and have them sit down to eat, and will come and serve them. And if he should come in the second watch, or come in the third watch, and find them so, blessed are those servants. But know this, that if the master of the house had known what hour the thief would come, he would have watched and not allowed his house to be broken into. Therefore you also be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.” Luke 12:35-40
