And He said to them, “Why are you troubled? And why do doubts arise in your hearts? Luke 24:38
It all started with a statement.
I said to the big boss the other day, “Don’t worry! I didn’t touch your coffee!”
Concern immediately covered his face as he looked at his coffee cup and then back at me.
“I didn’t touch it. Not me. I did not bother your coffee.”
He picked up the cup, visually examined it, and then gave it a sniff.
As he looked back at me I reassured him once again that I had not touched his coffee.
He began to scan the room including a folder of papers he had lying on the table.
With his hand on the folder he looked again at me.
“I didn’t touch your coffee!”
His only question was, “What did you touch?”
“Not your coffee!” I replied.
Throughout the morning I continued to remind him that I had not touched his coffee.
He was genuinely concerned about what I had touched but the truth is I had not done anything but plant a seed of doubt in his mind.
He watered it and let it grow.
This is often the game that Satan plays with you, to cast doubt in your mind and let it grow.
“You’re not worthy of God’s love!”
“Jesus is going to get you for that!”
“You can’t go to heaven after doing that sin!”
Or even worse, “You can do that. It’s not really all that bad and everyone else is doing it.”
“You’re right! Your wife doesn’t understand you and that girl at the office does. It doesn’t hurt to just have lunch with her and talk about things. It’s such an innocent meeting.”
“Church doesn’t save anyone so you really don’t need to go so often. After all, you only get that one day a week off.”
Doubt and deception; it reminds me of a story out of Isaiah that I’ll tell you about next time.
