You shall not make any cuttings in your flesh for the dead, nor tattoo any marks on you: I am the LORD. Lev 19:28
Did you see where a California church has called on its congregation to show their commitment to God by getting a tattoo of the church’s logo?
The City Church in Anaheim, southeast of Los Angeles, is known for holding its Sunday services in a punk rock nightclub and using KFC buckets as collection tins.
Lead pastor, 26 year old Steven Bonenberger, calls it “the church for the people who don’t like church.”
“It’s the furthest thing from what people perceive church to be,” he said.
To celebrate its first anniversary, the church challenged its flock to tattoo themselves and the pastor led the festivities by getting inked with the logo, which features a red heart.
He told the congregation that God “tattooed your name on his heart.”
About a dozen churchgoers have so far taken up the challenge and gotten a matching tattoo.
I’m not here to condemn this church; they are (hopefully) reaching a section of society that no one else is and I pray it’s with the Gospel.
I am not one to have a tattoo on me!
I know many people with tattoo’s, even in my own fellowship; but it’s not for me and I would certainly never promote it as a “church thing”.
My church people need no body decoration to improve their looks; God loves them with or without.
A tat will not improve their devotion or commitment; commitment is in the heart and soul, not the under the skin.
Finally, will getting a tat really bring honor, glory, and praise to our Lord Jesus?
Whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him. Col 3:17
Just a final note: Sometimes I wonder with the popularity and ease of getting tattoo’s, if we are not being set-up for the mark spoken of in Revelation. We already have a generation or two that believe tat’s are cool. What better tat than one that shows devotion to a supreme leader that seemingly is also cool.
