Okay, I just have to make a comment about it!
When I was growing up I could easily get in trouble with mom by sticking out my tongue.
I was told it was nasty, it was ugly, and it was rude.
I was also told to keep it in my mouth.
That’s the way I was raised but something has changed over the past 50 years; nearly every photo of every young adult I look at on Facebook has at least one where they have their tongue sticking out.
What is this fascination with the tongue?
Has it changed over the years and can no longer be contained in the mouth?
Perhaps evolution is true and the tongue has grown smelling sensors on it like a snake!
I know that kids aren’t the only ones with this focus on the tongue; the Bible also has quite a lot to say about it.
Here are just a few examples.
Ps 34:13 Keep your tongue from evil, and your lips from speaking deceit.
Ps 12:3 May the LORD cut off all flattering lips, and the tongue that speaks proud things,
2 Sam 23:2 The Spirit of the LORD spoke by me, and His word was on my tongue.
Ps 119:172 My tongue shall speak of Your word, For all Your commandments are righteousness.
Prov 10:20 The tongue of the righteous is choice silver;
Prov 15:4 A wholesome tongue is a tree of life, But perverseness in it breaks the spirit.
Isa 28:11 For with stammering lips and another tongue He will speak to this people,
Luke 16:24 “Then he cried and said, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue ; for I am tormented in this flame.’
1 Cor 14:2 For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God, for no one understands him; however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries.
Phil 2:11 every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
James 3:8 But no man can tame the tongue. It is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.
1 John 3:18 My little children, let us not love in word or in tongue, but in deed and in truth.
It would seem we can put our tongues to doing something more useful for the glory of Jesus.
