The Promise of Mary

And Jacob begot Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus who is called Christ. Matt 1:16
The final woman in the begets that reminds us of a promise is Mary.
This young lady had no idea that she would be chosen by God to carry, give birth, and raise Messiah.
Her life was pretty following that of countless young women in Israel; get married and raise a family.
I’m not sure how much Torah she knew since the rules were different for women and men; but perhaps she had heard the scripture which said therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel. Isa 7:14
Did she lie in bed at night and stare up into the darkness and think about being that chosen woman?
Did she say her prayers and ask God to choose her?
Probably not; she was just like any other young lady planning her marriage to Joseph and life afterwards.
Perhaps she dreamt of what kind of home she and Joseph would have; how many children she would give him and what to name each!
But a funny thing happened on the way to the ceremony; now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows: After His mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Spirit. Matt 1:18
When Gabriel shows up to tell Mary God’s plans for her she is troubled and asks, “How can this be, since I do not know a man?” Luke 1:34
That’s exactly the point; she has never been intimate with a man.
Of course, it’s a hard story to believe; it’s something that had never happened before.
Joseph’s plan was to quietly get out of the betrothal and to not make a public spectacle of Mary, but he wanted nothing more to do with her.
Little did Joseph know the plan God had for him.
In a dream Joseph is told “and she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name JESUS, for He will save His people from their sins.”
So all this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying: “Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel,” which is translated, “God with us.” Matt 1:21-23
Mary is not only included in the genealogy because she is the mother of Jesus, but she is included because she gives us the Promise of Renewal.
The virgin birth fulfills this promise; a promise is one of renewal for each of us.
It is written if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new. 2 Cor 5:17
When someone accepts Jesus as Savior, that person is in Christ and is a new creation. It’s like having a “virgin”, a renewed and fresh relationship with God.
Even though our outward man is perishing, yet the inward man is being renewed day by day. 2 Cor 4:16
