The Big One Got Away!

Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men. Matt 4:19
One more thought on fishermen; did you know they have a tendency to exaggerate?
I know that guessing the size of the fish by how much it puts up a fight can be deceiving. I have thought I was pulling in whales when I pulled in a minnow.
Many times fishermen stories get bigger and bigger; and the biggest always gets away!
Sometimes we exaggerate what we do for Jesus, too.
A person might pray for someone with a short “Lord, bless ‘em” prayer and then think they have prayed fervently and moved mountains.
Someone else may sign a petition to keep liquor out of a community and to hear them tell it, you’d think they were Carry Nation.
Or how about this, a regular church attendee finds his or herself in a position to evangelize. The other person starts to “put up a fight” by saying things about the church, asking difficult questions on the Bible, or just calls everyone in the church a hypocrite. Our little evangelist struggles to know what to say and finally just blurts out, “Well you just wait. When you wake up in hell someday you’ll see I was right!”
Now our evangelist tells everyone what a great job he/she did at witnessing to this poor lost soul “that got away.”
Hey, if I yelled at the fish I wouldn’t catch any either!
Just like fishing, witnessing to the lost takes patience and endurance.
There is much preparation in fishing; and there is much in Christian witnessing. Prayer and Bible study are two good places to start.
Peter, James, John, and Andrew were taught how to fish for men with Jesus over a three year period.
They learned how to fish for men over the rest of their lifetimes.

Luke 5:4-11
Then he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Now go out where it is deeper, and let down your nets to catch some fish.”
“Master,” Simon replied, “we worked hard all last night and didn’t catch a thing. But if you say so, I’ll let the nets down again.” And this time their nets were so full of fish they began to tear! A shout for help brought their partners in the other boat, and soon both boats were filled with fish and on the verge of sinking.
When Simon Peter realized what had happened, he fell to his knees before Jesus and said, “Oh, Lord, please leave me—I’m too much of a sinner to be around you.” For he was awestruck by the number of fish they had caught, as were the others with him. 10 His partners, James and John, the sons of Zebedee, were also amazed.
Jesus replied to Simon, “Don’t be afraid! From now on you’ll be fishing for people!” And as soon as they landed, they left everything and followed Jesus.

  1. Jesus said His sheep know His voice & follow Him. I know Him first because I’ve been born again that’s when my ears were opened. Two, because He speaks to me through the Word, Bible, & through others that love Christ. And I have heard His voice. He spoke my name. And praise God, there is the Holy Spirit that speaks so softly deep within me. God keeps revealing Himself to me. I don’t want to go in any other direction. He is so good to me, He is so AWESOME I want everone to know Him. That’s my fisherman training.
