I marvel that you are turning away so soon from Him who called you in the grace of Christ, to a different gospel, which is not another; but there are some who trouble you and want to pervert the gospel of Christ. But even if we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel to you than what we have preached to you, let him be accursed. As we have said before, so now I say again, if anyone preaches any other gospel to you than what you have received, let him be accursed. Gal 1:6-9
Recently one of the channels aired a program about the Gospel of Judas. One thing to note, it is believed that the writings took place in the 2nd century A. D., which means Judas could not have written them since he had hanged himself after the crucifixion of Christ. (c. f. Matt 27:3-5)
There is much written about this from National Geographic, which claims that Judas was not a traitor but a hero; that Jesus told him to betray Him so scripture could be fulfilled.
However there is a problem.
The New York Times did an article about the societies translation saying, Several of the translation choices made by the society’s scholars fall well outside the commonly accepted practices in the field. For example, in one instance the National Geographic transcription refers to Judas as a “daimon,” which the society’s experts have translated as “spirit.” Actually, the universally accepted word for “spirit” is “pneuma” – in Gnostic literature “daimon” is always taken to mean “demon.”
Likewise, Judas is not set apart “for” the holy generation, as the National Geographic translation says, he is separated “from” it.
The Society even admits to an error in the translation, which came too late to change public misconception.
The warning of Paul to the Galatians is still holding true for today’s church – do not believe other gospels!
There is a great danger when one strays outside the realm of God’s word. That danger is even greater for young Christians that cannot discern the milk of the Word from the canned milk of the world!
