Schooling sets a foundation for a lifetime of learning. Imagine if no one ever searched for deeper answers; if everyone just accepted that what we have now is all there is.
Then the world would still be using campfires for warmth and living in thatched huts or caves.
There would be no electric lights because fire would be the only light. No telephone, TV, or radio because talking in person would be the only communication and entertainment.
But mankind has always reached for more knowledge.
Imagine thousands of years of cooking with wood and seeing by candlelight or oil lamps. The material for constructing power plants, transmission lines, and a light bulb has always been around. What was lacking for thousands of years was the right combination of people inventing the right combination of inventions. A light bulb in 1492 would not have done Columbus any good without the invention of a power source to run it.
There was someone that taught Thomas Edison some basic skills – math, science, history, and language – but his teacher never invented the incandescent light. In fact, Thomas’ mom taught him at home. Thomas reached beyond that teaching to learn more and that would eventually lead him to invent many items that are the foundations of today’s basic electronic devices around the home, office, and in school.
Someone, in turn, took the Edison inventions and improved upon them and another person did the same to that improvement and on and on until we end up where we are today.
Likewise, my days at Jacksonville Baptist College laid a foundation for a lifetime of learning. I may have received a degree but that doesn’t mean I know it all.
I could have continued my education and gone on to seminary and receive a master’s or doctorate. That would not mean my studying would stop.
In fact, I did not accept what I was taught as the absolute end. There are many things that I know and believe today that were not covered in my studies at JBC.
I remember a group study session on the Book of Acts. We had read where Paul had been run out of town by the Thessalonian’s. They ended up traveling to Berea.
And the people of Berea were more open-minded than those in Thessalonica, and they listened eagerly to Paul’s message. They searched the Scriptures day after day to see if Paul and Silas were teaching the truth. Acts 17:11
It may have been Jim Schafer that called this the Berean Bible Study.
The Berean’s searched the Old Testament scripture to determine if Paul’s “New Testament” teaching was true.
They did not simply accept it as fact.
I, too, have searched the scriptures and continue to do so. Studying the scripture will open up more knowledge of the nature and character of God. It will reveal His will for you.
Ps 119:15 – I will study your commandments and reflect on your ways.
