A bit more on the freedom you have in Jesus when you trust Him as Lord and Savior of your life.
It takes more than just belief, though believing is important.
Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”
They answered Him, “We are Abraham’s descendants, and have never been in bondage to anyone. How can You say, ‘You will be made free’?”
Jesus answered them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, whoever commits sin is a slave of sin. And a slave does not abide in the house forever, but a son abides forever. Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.” John 8:31-36
Jesus had some Jews that believed in Him but He still told them to abide in His word, that is, remain faithful to my teachings (NLT), then they would be truly free.
The believing Jews then claimed kinship to Abraham.
This almost like a Christian saying, “I’m a Christian because my mom was a Christian. And my grandparents were Christians. In fact, they started this church!”
I actually had someone tell me that.
You don’t receive salvation on the laurels of someone else!
YOU know the truth and the truth will make YOU free!
So what are the teachings of Jesus that you should abide in?
The first thought in my mind was something He said, “You are to be perfect, even as your Father in heaven is perfect.” Matt 5:48
Perfection isn’t easy to attain. Even Apostle Paul had this to say – Not that I have already attained, or am already perfected; but I press on, that I may lay hold of that for which Christ Jesus has also laid hold of me. Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. Phil 3:12-14
Paul gives you your only course – keep moving forward toward Jesus!
Jesus is your perfection. If you’re moving forward toward Jesus then you are not going to have the time to turn back around toward your former sinful life and former sinful ways.
You will soon discover that your perfection is in Jesus offering Himself for you!
For by one offering He has perfected forever those who are being sanctified. Heb 10:14
