Then the Pharisees met together to think of a way to trap Jesus into saying something for which they could accuse him. They decided to send some of their disciples, along with the supporters of Herod, to ask him this question: “Teacher, we know how honest you are. You teach about the way of God regardless of the consequences. You are impartial and don’t play favorites. Now tell us what you think about this: Is it right to pay taxes to the Roman government or not?”
But Jesus knew their evil motives. “You hypocrites!” he said. “Whom are you trying to fool with your trick questions? Here, show me the Roman coin used for the tax.” When they handed him the coin, he asked, “Whose picture and title are stamped on it?”
“Caesar’s,” they replied.
“Well, then,” he said, “give to Caesar what belongs to him. But everything that belongs to God must be given to God.”
His reply amazed them, and they went away. Matt 22:15-22 NLT
I read this today and begin to think, “What belongs to God?”
If I built a machine and out of that machine came ice cream sundaes, then whose ice cream sundaes would they be?
Mine, of course, since I built the machine.
Now you have around you plants, trees, and all types of vegetation that do several things.
The most basic operation of plant-life is to take carbon dioxide and turn it into oxygen – air!
Who created the plants? (Then God said, “Let the land burst forth with every sort of grass and seed-bearing plant. And let there be trees that grow seed-bearing fruit. The seeds will then produce the kinds of plants and trees from which they came.” And so it was. Gen 1:11 NLT)
So to whom does the very air you breathe belong to?
Then it would seem that your very life exist on Someone else’s air.
So if you were to give to God what belongs to Him, then you must give to God your life, your existence; your very breath!
This may be the very reason why David said, “I will praise the LORD as long as I live. I will sing praises to my God even with my dying breath.” Ps 146:2 NLT
Now you really didn’t think I wanted to talk about paying taxes and the economy did you?
It’s not all about what Washington is doing. It’s about what YOU are doing?
Indeed this is the time to be thinking about our Creator rather than man and what he is doing!
