The High Point Of Our Vacation (Literally)

Rising up from the ground just north of
Fredericksburg is a huge, pink granite exfoliation dome.
It covers 640 acres and rises up 425 feet above ground, 1825 feet above sea level.
It was a challenge for Linda and me.
As we stood at the base looking up at tiny people scaling up and down this behemoth, we wondered if this was the right thing to do.
We started our ascent with gps, cell phones, water, and Gatorade.

At the base looking up 425 feet to the summit.

At the base looking up 425 feet to the summit.

Being somewhat physically out-of-shape, I decided to set mini-goals for us.
“Let’s head for that boulder.”
“Angle for those flowers!”
“We’ll get a drink when we reach that outcrop of rocks!”
We did reach the top and do you want to know how?
One step at a time!
That’s kind of the way the Christian walk is too.
It’s not a race to get to the top, there’ no award handed out, and no money to be gained.
It’s just two people accomplishing something for themselves.

The "trail" up leads past cactus, flowers, and small trees.

The mark is high! You’re not competing against some one else.
And you’ll get there one step at a time.
But to get to the top you must try.
Linda and I weren’t going to make it up the side by standing at the bottom and watching everyone else.
Being a better Christian starts with one prayer at a time, reading one verse at a time, and joining the fellowship.
Of course you’ll have to put one foot in front of the other to get to church on time for that one!

The angle is steep and the rock face is broad!

So I run straight to the goal with purpose in every step. 1 Cor 9:26 NLT

Reaching the top is a reward in itself.

  1. Great adventures start with an expectent heart. Without a goal (hope) we’ll find nothing. I am so pleased there are those like you guys that find God everywhere. He is!

  2. Linda, I am so proud of you! I climbed Enchanted Rock when I was in college. But, all these years and four children later, I doubt I could do it now. HAHA!
