The Devil Made Me Do It

Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. And when He had fasted forty days and forty nights, afterward He was hungry. Now when the tempter came to Him, he said, “If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread.” Matt 4:1-3
I remember when I was young, there was a black comedian named Flip Wilson.
One of his most popular skits was “The Devil Made Me Buy That Dress.”

It was on TV then on radio and every one would laugh.
But Satan is no laughing matter.
I want to look a few Biblical facts about him.
First, Satan will tempt you wherever God leads you.
Notice that Jesus was led up by the Spirit [of God] to be tempted by the devil.
Just because God brought you some place doesn’t mean Satan will not tempt you in that place.
Satan will also tempt you with what your physical need is the most.
After fasting 40 days and nights, of course Jesus would be hungry.
He didn’t tempt him with wine and women; it wasn’t with a fried chicken and mashed potatoes; it was a simple meal of fresh baked bread, perhaps with a little butter!
To eat was His most demanding physical need and Satan tempted in the simplest way.
But Satan also tempts with a temporary solution.
Jesus could have turned the stones into bread and ate but later on He would be hungry again.
Satan can never satisfy like God.
This is why Jesus responded with, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’” Matt 4:4, Deut 8:3
There is nothing more permanently satisfying than our God.
Next time your tempted to go with the quick, easy solution, remember that it is written,
Taste and see that the LORD is good; Blessed is the man who trusts in Him! Ps 34:8
