What Are They Singing About?

I have a 3 months free subscription to XM satellite radio and Linda and I have been listening to the 50’s style music.
Now both of us are very familiar with this era because it was what our parents listened to when they were teenagers and it filter on in after both of us were born.
As much as I am shocked by the lyrics of today’s music, I am amazed at the number of sexual innuendoes in the 50’s music.
Though there were many songs of boyfriend-girlfriend relationship and the mention of many girl names in the music, there were also the more risqué lyrics.
I guess when you’re young you don’t pick up on it, you’re just interested in the beat and the doo-wops.
Linda and I listened to one song that said, “Gimme (gravy)
On my mash potatoes; Gimme (gravy), C’mon an’ hold me tight;
Gimme (gravy), Baby, you’re the greatest, So gimme, gimme, gimme, gimme, gravy tonight.”
Ok, it’s a song about 2 things that go well together – mashed potatoes and gravy.
It’s not too different than a song I listened to in the 70’s; With you I’m not shy to show the way I feel, With you I might try my secrets to reveal, For you are a magnet and I am steel.
Another song about 2 things that go well together – magnet and steel.
Both can be taken as very suggestive.
I guess this is why I like Christian music so well; you know what the message is going to be.
Whether it’s the songs you sing in church on Sunday’s or Wednesday’s.
Or the songs you sing and hum to from Christian radio; they all speak of the same thing – the glory of God.
The Bible tells us this, Oh, sing to the LORD a new song! Sing to the LORD, all the earth. Sing to the LORD, bless His name; Proclaim the good news of His salvation from day to day. Declare His glory among the nations, His wonders among all peoples. Ps 96:1-3
The lyrics of the Psalm are suggestive also. They suggest you should praise God in your music.

  1. Question? How are we listening? Jesus gave parables. And people heard with their ears and Jesus had to explain His words. When people saw miracles they understood it was God at work. He has given us the written Word to see with our eyes, and with the help of the Holy Spirit we hear. God is pouring out His Spirit. We are dreaming & having visions. We are seeing. Perhaps we should be listening with our eyes.
