To Burn Or Not To Burn – That Is The Question!

You may have heard about the pastor in Florida that is having a Koran burning at his church on September 11th.
I can understand the fuel of hate behind this action.
I know how many feel on this anniversary of the attack on America, the falling of the Twin Towers, the Pentagon, and Flight 93 crashing in a field in Pennsylania.
Certainly in our nation the 1st Amendment gives the Freedom of Speech to burn the Koran, a cross, a Bible, or our own flag.
Let me ask this question: what good will this do?
Will it reassemble the Twin Towers?
Will it bring back those lives lost?
Will it end the war on terrorism?
More importantly for Christians, will it glorify the Name of Jesus and draw sinners to Him in repentance and salvation?
The last time I read the Bible it said the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. Heb 4:12
I don’t read within the pages that burning the Koran is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword.
Jesus said, “If I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all peoples to Myself.” John 12:32
It doesn’t say if the Koran is lifted up!
I know you will never win someone to Christ by insulting them first.
Even Paul when he saw the idolatry of the Greeks did not insult them; Paul stood in the midst of the Areopagus and said, “Men of Athens, I perceive that in all things you are very religious; for as I was passing through and considering the objects of your worship, I even found an altar with this inscription: TO THE UNKNOWN GOD.” Acts 17:22-23
He actually complimented them, calling them “very religious” but he went on to preach Jesus.
Can you imagine what would have happened if Paul had said, “You men of Athens are wrong in your religious beliefs! You’re a bunch of idolaters! You’re all sinners and you’re going to die and go to hell! But let me share with you about the love of my Jesus!”
I think he would have lost that audience.
Jesus said, “Behold, I send you out as sheep in the midst of wolves. Therefore be wise as serpents and harmless as doves.” Matt 10:16
Wise and harmless; quite a combination!

  1. This Pastor in Florida seem to want to have, “an eye for an eye” disregarding Jesus’ commandment to “turn the other cheek”
We are also told by our Lord that we will be known by our Love. As far as I know, Love does not include burning their religious texts.

  2. I love that you wrote about this! I agree with everything you said. Although some may think that we are more than due for a pay back after all Islam has done to us as Christians. It’s true we are over due for it if we were going by worldly standards. However, it is against God that we stoop to their level. Not saying that we should never fight for our beliefs, but as you said what good does it really do? Also, it puts our whole nation in danger. Why would we do that when God has it in his hands? I think if we could ask him ourselves, he would say something along the lines of, “I got this guys!” Wise and harmless. I don’t think you could have picked out two better words for this situation
