The Fertile Heart

I love this parable.
“Listen! Behold, a sower went out to sow. And it happened, as he sowed, that some seed fell by the wayside; and the birds of the air came and devoured it. Some fell on stony ground, where it did not have much earth; and immediately it sprang up because it had no depth of earth. But when the sun was up it was scorched, and because it had no root it withered away. And some seed fell among thorns; and the thorns grew up and choked it, and it yielded no crop. But other seed fell on good ground and yielded a crop that sprang up, increased and produced: some thirtyfold, some sixty, and some a hundred.” Mark 4:3-8
And He said to them, “Do you not understand this parable? How then will you understand all the parables? The sower sows the word. And these are the ones by the wayside where the word is sown. When they hear, Satan comes immediately and takes away the word that was sown in their hearts. These likewise are the ones sown on stony ground who, when they hear the word, immediately receive it with gladness; and they have no root in themselves, and so endure only for a time. Afterward, when tribulation or persecution arises for the word’s sake, immediately they stumble. Now these are the ones sown among thorns; they are the ones who hear the word, and the cares of this world, the deceitfulness of riches, and the desires for other things entering in choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful. But these are the ones sown on good ground, those who hear the word, accept it, and bear fruit: some thirtyfold, some sixty, and some a hundred.” Mark 4:13-20
Do you ever feel like you throwing all the seed on rock or in thorns?
It seems you see little good from it all.
Planting the word of God is not like planting seeds in a garden.
With seeds you can find the most fertile ground.
With people you don’t always get the most fertile heart.
But you can work ground, clear it, fertilize it, and prepare it for seeds, plants, and crop.
It can’t be too much different with people.

  1. It all depends on willingness to surrender, to be trained, to admit “I need help.” I need help! Twice in this past year the Lord has spoken to me with that still small voice, and I missed Him. What ever it takes to make me prosperous in relationship with Him I am willing ! Father God speaks with me often. The two times I refer to were of things I didn’t want. [ fore warning of my daughter’s death, and an opending accident of a dear friend] When ground is gardened it is in constant preperation some of which is unpleasent.

  2. Arlene, I’m sorry for the loss of your daughter, but I’m sure you know that you will see her again in Heaven. There are those who come into our paths, and we need to be praying for the Lord to give us the right things to say to them, that will open doors for further dialogue with them. There are so many who don’t want to hear about God, but by the power of the Holy Spirit, He can prepare their hearts to receive the seeds or to water the seeds that God had someone else plant. Yep, ya get your hands dirty when preparing a garden for planting, but, as it is written, we can do all things through Christ, Who strengthens us!
May God pour out His blessings upon you and your family!

  3. We have to keep spreading the word no matter if you like the person, they are hard headed and dont want to hear it..but I believe the most awesome way we can spread the word is thru our lives..people watch our actions and our words–if we are not living the way we should be or not having patience enough with unbelievers it is not showing them a good testimony..we should really take it to heart of what would Jesus do and live it..pray continuously for those in need of Salvation..and spread the Word that Jesus died on the Cross for Everyone!

  4. Friend, you are absolutely correct:) I’m sure you’ve heard the saying that we may be the only Bible that some people see~~~by our actions in all situations, especially the unpleasant ones, where our “flesh” would love to lash out at someone who’s being difficult with us. Gotta keep a smile on our face, push down those fleshly responses to give them a “tongue-lashing,” like an unsaved person would do, and bless them as we leave. I’ve made it a point to tell those in service position, like checkers at stores, God bless you, as I leave. You never know who’s heart will be touched, and God will send someone else along to tend to the seed planted. With society spiraling further downhill, it’s gonna be more difficult in the days ahead to be salt and light, but God will give us the right things to say, or the Holy Spirit will prompt us in the way we should behave in difficult situations. Doors will be opened for us to let unbelievers know about the great gift of Salvation that we’ve received through Jesus Christ. To God be the glory!
