…be sober 1 Peter 1:13
The NIV says be self-controlled.
The word means to abstain from wine and I would suggest that this would mean anything that would impair judgment.
How can I truly “Be holy, for I am holy” (1 Peter 1:16) when I am allowing my Godly decisions to be clouded by ungodly things?
Why is it important to be sober?
Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. 1 Peter 5:8
If I am not sober, if I do not exhibit self-control, then I give place to the devil, for he is stalking me, waiting for an opportune moment to pounce.
There are many things that can hinder our minds; anger, hatred, worry, stress, anxiety, lust, lying, whatever you call it, it’s just sin.
But if I am to be impaired then the Bible once again gives me the way.
It is written do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit, speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord, giving thanks always for all things to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, submitting to one another in the fear of God. Eph 5:18-21
If I am to be impaired then let it be the Spirit of God that does it.
AMEN
