Disciplinary Action

Do you ever feel like you’re being punished by God for something you’ve done?
I’ll admit I think that at times.
Last night I was, as I call it, deathly sick and 2 thoughts run through my mind; what did I eat or what did I do?
There are some that don’t believe that God would “punish” His children for anything at all; rather He would bless them.
I agree that God wants to bless us but I also know that I punished my own children when they did wrong.
I also wanted to love on them and bless them.
Years ago one of my mentors taught me a scripture; we talked about it a lot.
It deals with the idea of chastisement of God.
Chastening is the education, instruction, or disciplinary action of someone.
I recall a few teachers that gave me some “disciplinary action” with a 2-foot paddle.
Did they do it because they were mean?
No! More likely because I was unruly and disturbing the education and instruction of others.
What was the scripture that my mentor and I talked about?
Heb 12:5-11 “My son, do not despise the chastening of the LORD, nor be discouraged when you are rebuked by Him; for whom the LORD loves He chastens, and scourges every son whom He receives.”
If you endure chastening, God deals with you as with sons; for what son is there whom a father does not chasten? But if you are without chastening, of which all have become partakers, then you are illegitimate and not sons. Furthermore, we have had human fathers who corrected us, and we paid them respect. Shall we not much more readily be in subjection to the Father of spirits and live? For they indeed for a few days chastened us as seemed best to them, but He for our profit, that we may be partakers of His holiness. Now no chastening seems to be joyful for the present, but painful; nevertheless, afterward it yields the peaceable fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.
My friend and mentor died years ago so I no longer have him to discuss it with.
So what do you think?

  1. We know from the O.T. (our example) that to many people don’t reconize God’s correction in their lives. I am one that realized Father’s love alot in my “babe” years. Once I commented to a friend that God used to realy love me, but of late not so much. Her reply was that I mutured enough to reconize my wrong doing & seek forgiveness. So we’ve moved on down the road. I know that I know that God loves me! When I am in the wrong He is quick to lst me know.

  2. I think it was something you ate, but perhaps it was something you know makes you sick, like shrimp! Yes, God’s word tells us that He chastens those whom He loves, as a father chastens his son. Yep, God does punish us, in different ways, to get our attention, and get our eyes back on Him, and behaving according to how He wants us to behave. With some, it may start out like having our hand slapped, and if that doesn’t get our attention, He may have to take more drastic action. Like obeying my parents, cause I knew what they expected of me, I try to obey God, and do what He expects of me. And, no, I’m not always successful as my human nature can get in the way, like loosing my temper and saying something I shouldn’t, instead of going off to spend time in fellowship with the Lord, and asking for His forgiveness and His guidance.
