Now it happened as they went that He entered a certain village; and a certain woman named Martha welcomed Him into her house. And she had a sister called Mary, who also sat at Jesus’ feet and heard His word. But Martha was distracted with much serving, and she approached Him and said, “Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Therefore tell her to help me.” Luke 10:38-40
We looked at this scripture last night at church; the topic was worrying.
I saw something else during the study – distraction.
Martha was distracted by making sure everything was clean, set, cooked, served, filled; that the guests were comfortable and well taken care of.
She didn’t have time to sit and listen to the words of Jesus because of these distractions.
Meanwhile her sister sat down and listened to what Jesus had to say.
This causes more of a distraction for Martha; she believes she is doing more than anyone else, especially her sister and that wasn’t fair.
It reminds me of the conversation between Jesus and Peter; Then Peter, turning around, saw the disciple whom Jesus loved following, who also had leaned on His breast at the supper, and said, “Lord, who is the one who betrays You?” Peter, seeing him, said to Jesus, “But Lord, what about this man?”
Jesus said to him, “If I will that he remain till I come, what is that to you? You follow Me.” John 21:20-22
The center of attention should be on Jesus, not on the food and refreshments; not on what others are doing or not doing.
The center of your attention should always be on the Lord.
I see the distraction all the time in church; concern over someone not standing to sing, not sitting still and listening, whispering, passing a note, or sending a text.
The center of your attention should always be on the Lord.
? in Acts There is an uproar for the tables to be waited on, widows to be cared for. The desciples said to choose out men for that job. We should know our own calling and leave others to theirs. Should we need help, well Jesus said He is a present help let’s relie on Him to provide.

Awesome post and very true. It can even go beyond this and into our daily lives. We need to focus more on what we do than on what others are doing. Such a waste of energy and it leads to gossip, envy, strife, and stress.
