From Plunging Toilets to Preaching Gospel

Andy Comer is our evangelist at camp this year.
I remember Andy from our early years at camp when he was, what is called, a slop-jock.
A slop-jock is a young man that works at camp all summer long and hauls trash, divides up the thrown-away food into solids and liquids, and they do maintenance around the dorms and cabins.
One time, years ago, I approached Brother Speer and told him one of the toilets in our cabin was stopped up.
Andy was standing there and, with great excitement, grabbed a plunger and took off towards our cabin.
I couldn’t understand why anyone would be excited about plunging a toilet but later he said that the days he lived for because it broke up the monotony of every other day!
You don’t forget those wise sayings from the slop-jocks.
Andy has also been the recreation director for our camp in years past.
He was the one that outlined the outdoor field games the kids would play.
Even last night he helped out.
Now he is married, has a child, is pastoring, and preaching our camp meetings.
It is written in Rom 12:2; don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will know what God wants you to do, and you will know how good and pleasing and perfect his will really is. NLT
Andy has grown and matured into an exceptionally fine man and delivers the word of God with such simplicity and understanding.
Paul said, “Salvation that comes from trusting Christ — which is the message we preach — is already within easy reach. In fact, the Scriptures say, ‘The message is close at hand; it is on your lips and in your heart.’ For if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” Rom 10:8-9 NLT
Andy preaches the same message of salvation that Paul talks about; last night, after his message, I led 3 young girls in a salvation prayer.
The Holy Spirit worked through this young man to bring a simple message that the young understand and respond to!
I’m so glad that Andy has gone from plunging the toilets to preaching the Gospel.

  1. Awww! Thank you so much Tim for your kind words about Andy. We are so proud of Andy and how God has continued to use him and bless him through the years. We are indeed blessed as parents to be able to have a part in his life and to see the way that so many are blessed through his ministry.
