Do what you can!

On June 21st a storm rolled through late in the evening; I remember because I documented the damage with pictures.
This storm was so powerful that it topped trees and blew many over, including at my home.
I ended up with a pine top on the house and another on the barn.
Several hardwoods were blown over throughout my acreage.
I don’t like to waste hardwood.
I don’t believe in piling it all up and burning it.
Instead I prefer to cut it up for firewood.
Normally I could have it all hauled, cut, split, and stacked but age, aches, and a 100 degree summer has slowed me down considerably.
Honestly, I felt lazy but I just couldn’t drag myself out of the house after work or on a Saturday to face the heat and humidity.
I did one Saturday and it took a while to recover.
This makes me think of a Bible scripture from the book of Proverbs.
Go to the ant, you sluggard! Consider her ways and be wise, which, having no captain, overseer or ruler, provides her supplies in the summer, and gathers her food in the harvest.
How long will you slumber, O sluggard? When will you rise from your sleep? A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep — So shall your poverty come on you like a prowler, and your need like an armed man. Prov 6:6-11
I don’t really consider myself a sluggard or a lazy man.
I get up every day around the same time, read some Bible, spend time with my wife, and drive 38 miles to my radio job in Lufkin.
I’ve been driving to Lufkin to work since 1979.
I pastor a church, I play guitar during praise & worship; I’m a husband, dad, and grand dad.
You know, I’m feeling better about not getting the firewood into the barn.
It’s not about what I haven’t done – it’s about what has been done.
And besides all of this, I haven’t noticed ant mounds in the yard like I have in years past. Could it be the dry Texas summer even had the ants slowing down?
Do what you can today for yourself, for your employer, and for the Lord; that’s all that’s expected of you!

  1. I needed to hear this, this morning! I’m always beating myself up about things I DON’T get around to, while forgetting to take a glance at all I DID accomplish! Thanks!
