Intimacy – Part 1

Someone posted a verse of scripture on Facebook the other evening and as I read it I had a new thought about it.
The verse posted was Gen 2:24 – Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.
Jesus also quoted this in Matthew 10:35 and 19:5.
Paul also quotes it in Ephesians 5:31.
That’s a minimum of 4 times that the same thing is said.
I’ve always said that if God tells us something – it’s important.
But when God repeats Himself 2, 3, or 4 times, then we had better be listening.
This verse deals with a relationship between a husband and wife.
The marriage relationship is in trouble today, not so much from divorce, though that is a problem; but it’s in trouble from a lack of marriage commitment to begin with.
The Hebrew word for flesh is basar, which has a sexual connotation.
So basically it is saying that intimacy between a man and woman is to be reserved for marriage.
This idea is further proven by scripture like Heb 13:4 – Marriage is honorable among all, and the bed undefiled; but fornicators and adulterers God will judge.
Plus there are a many other verses that insist fornication be avoided.
Perhaps many of today’s youth, even church youth, don’t know the meaning of fornication.
According to Merriam-Webster it is consensual [physical intimacy] between two persons not married to each other.
This is why the Word has told us 4 times “a man…be joined to his wife.”
For single people I say if she isn’t your wife and if he isn’t your husband then it is fornication.
This is not what is being said today by TV shows and pop culture.
As a result the morals of the church have been on the decline for several years.
I remember some 35 years ago a Christian man telling me that it was okay for him and his fiancé to engage in physical intimacy. In fact, he had scripture to back him up.

  1. I have 5 grands, and two different mothers, and three different daddys. IT IS COMPLACATED. It is troubled! Although several of the above profess Christ as personal Savior there seems to be no relationship with Him. I want to believe they are saved. Biblical concepts are difficult for any of them to axcept. Obviously marrage tops the list. People are glad God is the same yesterday, today,& forever, just not those out dated concepts.
