Happy Father’s Day

His preaching will turn the hearts of fathers to their children, and the hearts of children to their fathers. Mal 4:6
Today’s Morning Thought is a bit different. I was looking through some archives from 2003 and I found a poem I had written for Father’s Day.
Since Father’s Day is this Sunday, I thought I would repost it!

He left the house before I got up and was gone all day long.
At night I waited at the door for him to come back home.
He’d walk in, pick me up and I’d hug him with all my might
But later, when I was in bed, I could hear them in a fight.
I’d cry myself to sleep at night listening to them shout;
And wonder why they fought; what was it all about?
Then the day came when dad left for good and mom and I moved too.
Then a judge said, “Every two weeks is when your dad can see you.”
It was my fault they got a divorce – I knew I was to blame;
I wondered what I had done to cause them so much pain.
But I knew that I did not want a relationship like they had,
I didn’t want my marriage to be like that of mom and dad.
I cried a lot through those years, as I grew to be a man,
Vowing to God that I’d be the best “husband and dad I can.”
Years later I met a girl and fell head over heels in love
Always remembering the vow I made to God above.
The day came when Linda and I decided to become one;
We loved, laughed, made a home and had lots of fun.
Then one day she said something that made me so very glad.
Oh, the feeling a man gets when he hears, “You’re going to be a dad.”
A baby girl blessed our home with joy and Lindsey is her name.
A year or so later Kimberly came along and the feeling was the same.
But I found myself doing just as my own dad had done,
Leaving for work and coming home from dawn to setting sun.
Yet I remembered the vow I had made to God many years before
And coming home is easy when you love your family more and more.
Many years later, the girls have grown, both with children of their own,
And every day after work is done, you’ll still see me come back home.
Working hard and raising a family is never easy, I know.
I do it because of the change that Jesus made in my soul.
You see, my heavenly Father has taught this important thing to me
To love my wife, don’t provoke my kids, and cherish my family.
And knowing that my love is returned by each of them every day,
Makes every day in my heart a Happy Father’s day.
