Hate, Love, and Bigotry

Hate evil, love good; Amos 5:15
What would you think of me if I saw a house burning and I knew there were people inside and I did nothing? I didn’t try to wake them up and warn them or call 911.
You would think very bad of me; maybe think I was non-caring and hateful.
According to an online dictionary, hate is defined as an intense hostility and aversion usually deriving from fear, anger, or sense of injury; extreme dislike or antipathy : loathing.
Now if I had stopped and helped the family in the burning house, perhaps even saved them, then you’d think I was caring and loving; a real humanitarian and maybe a hero.
Love is defined as unselfish loyal and benevolent concern for the good of another.
So why is it when a Christian sees someone living in a sinful condition and tries to warn them and help them it’s called hateful?
Wednesday’s Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day has been defined as a bunch of hateful bigots trying to stuff chicken sandwiches in the face of the opposition.
Bigot is defined, by the same source, as a person who is obstinately or intolerantly devoted to his or her own opinions and prejudices; especially : one who regards or treats the members of a group (as a racial or ethnic group) with hatred and intolerance.
For that matter it seems that everyone is a bigot, that is, wholly devoted to his or her opinions.
King David said, “I have hated the assembly of evildoers, and will not sit with the wicked.” Ps 26:5
That’s pretty hateful and bigoted of him.
This is what the Lord God said, “Yet Jacob I have loved; but Esau I have hated, and laid waste his mountains and his heritage for the jackals of the wilderness.” Mal 1:2-3
That doesn’t sound good either.
Then there is Jesus, who said, “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs which indeed appear beautiful outwardly, but inside are full of dead men’s bones and all uncleanness.” Matt 23:27
He called them hypocrites and dead!
But what many take to be hateful bigotry is actually loving concern. Christians believe that sinners will be punished according to God’s word; that the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death. Rev 21:8
And anyone not found written in the Book of Life was cast into the lake of fire. Rev 20:15
We are genuinely concerned about the eternal well-being of others. So it is not out of hate and bigotry that a Christian prays for you and tells you about salvation through Jesus. It just that we see you as a house burning and we want to warn you.
Don’t think of them as enemies, but warn them as you would a brother or sister. 2 Thess 3:15
That’s love!
