What you learn (without being taught)

inheritYou are a vast product of those before you.
You carry within you the ability to do good or evil through the inherited properties of your parents, grandparents, great-grandparents, and so on.
This is not an excuse for bad behavior, to simply say, “I can’t help myself. It’s bred into me!”
It is a reason to overcome.

Consider this – Abram travels to Egypt and tells his wife, Sarai, “Please say you are my sister, that it may be well with me for your sake, and that I may live because of you.” Gen 12:13
Many, many years later his son Isaac dwelt in Gerar. And the men of the place asked about his wife. And he said, “She is my sister” Gen 26:6-7
Many years later again, Jacob said to his father [Isaac], “I am Esau your firstborn; Gen 27:19

I am pretty certain that each father did not teach his son to lie but each son inherited the sin of lying from his father.
Perhaps each son could justify himself by saying, “My dad lied so I can do it too!” That kind of justification will not stand before God.

I have watched many children follow in the footsteps of the parents. The parents drank or used drugs – the children grow up to drink or use drugs.
The parents don’t work and live off welfare – the children grow up to become a ward of society.

I look at my own inheritance from my forefathers. I am a mixture of adulterers, liars, alcoholics, blasphemers, fornicators, and some God-fearing Christians.
This gave me the determination to overcome the ability to sin that lies within me.

I turn to another Father – to learn from Him and to strive to follow in His ways.
If a son asks for bread from any father among you, will he give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a serpent instead of a fish? Or if he asks for an egg, will he offer him a scorpion? If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him! Luke 11:11-13

You do not have to live in the shadow of your ancestors. Live as God desires for you to live!

  1. It is many great points here in the post! The Bible as well makes sure to mention Jesus’ lineage. Even though it too was filled with all sorts of shameful people. Great post. I too should be a serial killer, chain smoking drug addict with alcoholic tendencies but, by the grace of God I am not. I am a new creature! enjoy the week!
