Christian apologetics is just another way of saying “defending the faith”. For me, that’s not debating or arguing – it’s an explanation of the scripture, including the Gospel.
In a world that is hungry for anything meaningful and spiritual, it is important that Christians be ready to present the truth of the life changing, life saving Gospel in a moment’s notice.
The apostle Paul was one of the first to present Christian apologetics, as noted in Acts 9:22 –
[Paul] increased all the more in strength, and confounded the Jews who dwelt in Damascus, proving that this Jesus is the Christ.
Saul (also known as Paul) was determined to wipe out Christianity. Sounds familiar doesn’t it?
I advanced in Judaism beyond many of my contemporaries in my own nation, being more exceedingly zealous for the traditions of my fathers. Gal 1:14
He was the best Hebrew, the best Pharisee, and the best at defending the faith of Judaism. (Philippians 3:5, 6)
You have heard of my former conduct in Judaism, how I persecuted the church of God beyond measure and tried to destroy it. Gal 1:13
He was the one best equipped to rid the world of those troublemaking Christians.
He was also the one best equipped with the basis of Christianity – the Old Testament scripture.
He knew the Law and the Prophets but had yet to see Jesus as the fulfillment of both.
He just couldn’t be saved and converted on the Damascus road and remain satisfied with it. He would have to turn around 180° and build what he had been tearing down.
He would have to defend what he once destroyed.
As a Christian you will find yourself doing the same.
More about apologetics next time.
Abba, I never want to be saved and satisfied. I want to also increase in strength to confound and prove the Gospel of Christ. In Jesus name, YES&AMEN
