Getting to know someone!

I remember many, many years ago a young man was going to appear in Livingston, Texas for a concert. A church has scheduled him to sing in the sanctuary. The young man wasn’t famous, at least I had never heard of him and I was in Christian radio at the time.
I don’t think it was even a ticketed concert – just a love offering would be taken.

I didn’t bother going to that concert but the young man continued to sing and it wasn’t long before I did know his name.
His songs were played on the radio. He would have some that would reach #1 on the charts and he would win awards; lots of awards.

That young man was Steven Curtis Chapman.

It’s funny how I paid no attention many years ago to a man that has done so well.

In the Bible the same thing happened to David.

And so it was, whenever the [tormenting] spirit from God was upon Saul, that David would take a harp and play it with his hand. Then Saul would become refreshed and well, and the distressing spirit would depart from him. 1 Sam 16:23

He was employed as a harp player in the court of King Saul and actually played for him when he was troubled and depressed. You would have thought that the king would get to know this young man. But years later when Israel and the Philistines are engaged in battle, a young man went out to face the Philistine champion, Goliath.

I’m sure you remember the story. What you may not know is Saul’s reaction to David’ victory.

When Saul saw David going out against the Philistine, he said to Abner, the commander of the army, “Abner, whose son is this youth?”
And Abner said, “As your soul lives, O king, I do not know.”
So the king said, “Inquire whose son this young man is.” 1 Sam 17:55-56

It might be to your advantage to get to know those around you. Perhaps you will meet a future president or the next inventor of some miracle cure.

Another unknown to many people is a young Baby that was born in some obscure little town not far from Jerusalem. He grew up to be King of Kings and Lord of Lords. However many have not paid much attention to Him and even more have not trusted in His love and grace for Salvation.

Get to know those around you but more importantly – get to know Jesus!
