Money’s Temptation

Yesterday I came home and Linda was watching one of the TV ministries. These ministries are much needed for those that cannot get out the house or those just wanting some daily encouragement between their visits to their own church.

However, I do not agree with every televangelist that comes along.

It seems there are some ulterior motives with many of them – gimmicks, as I like to call them. Perhaps I could call it “bribery” for you to give them money.

I know their ministry needs funding. I work for a ministry that needs funding and twice a year we have what is called a Shareathon.
But we don’t spend the money sent to us frivolously. We’re not going to add your name to a brick and pave a path to a new luxurious prayer garden that you may never visit and never see.
It’s not going to be used to purchase hundreds of poinsettia’s at Christmas just so the set can look good.
It’s not going to be used to buy a new jet – or any jet, for that matter.

It’s the frivolous, extravagant use of money that bothers me, especially if it overshadows the message of the Cross.

I’m sure you’re familiar with the scripture –

For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows. 1 Tim 6:10

The love of money can cause you to stray from the faith.
The Bible warns ministers not to be caught up in money.

Money can built a big church but cannot fill it with salvation.
Money can furnish a ministry center with the very best seating and facilities but cannot bring salvation to those that need it most.

Isaiah said it well when the Lord invited all to come to Him.

Ho! Everyone who thirsts, come to the waters; and you who have no money, come, buy and eat. Yes, come, buy wine and milk without money and without price.
Why do you spend money for what is not bread, and your wages for what does not satisfy? Listen carefully to Me, and eat what is good, and let your soul delight itself in abundance. Isa 55:1-2

Abundance is found in the Lord Jesus Christ and every ministry would be well advised to remember to seek God’s kingdom and righteousness above all else and God will supply what is needed. (Matthew 6:33)
