Get out of the way and get in the will!

And the Lord said to her: “Two nations are in your womb, two peoples shall be separated from your body; one people shall be stronger than the other, and the older shall serve the younger.” Gen 25:23

This was told to Rebekah, the wife of Isaac, as she inquired about her pregnancy with twin boys, Esau and Jacob.
In this God promised the younger would be blessed. As it turned out, Jacob was the younger of the two.

During the course of their lives the God’s promise was always there, working in the background to come to fulfillment. How was God going to accomplish this?

One day Jacob had cooked a simple stew when his brother shows up hungry.

And Esau said to Jacob, “Please feed me with that same red stew, for I am weary.” Therefore his name was called Edom.
But Jacob said, “Sell me your birthright as of this day.” Gen 25:30-31

Esau did! It was done and I believe that the fulfillment of the prophecy would happen!
But I don’t think it had to happen the way it did – through deceit and trickery.

Enter Rebekah, who wanted to see her favorite child succeed. She devised a plan to trick her elderly husband into blessing the youngest son.

And he did! But did it have to happen that way? I don’t think Rebekah had to interfere. She panicked and got the wheels in motion to make Isaac bless Jacob through lying and deceit. God used what happened to fulfill His promise but it didn’t have to be that way.

Esau sold his birthright – he despised it declaring that it would do him no good if he starved.
Later on God would declare through the prophet Malachi,

Jacob I have loved; But Esau I have hated, Mal 1:2-3

The relationship between these two brothers became bitter. It became a lifetime feud for generations to come. Did it have to come to this?

God is going to fulfill His promises – He always has. Sometimes people get in the way of God instead of letting Him do it.

Don’t get in God’s way today – get in God’s will and let God be God!
