I have sinned!

I could start by saying the adulterous-cheating Ashley Madison website claimed another victim. But that would not be true. The website simply dangled a carrot and provided a temptation.

But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed. Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death. James 1:14-15

If you entered your name and paid to join, then the only person responsible is you.

One of the names on the list is that of reality TV star Josh Duggar. His name was in the news recently for something that happened when he was 14 years old. But sexual sin at an early age can lead to sexual sin at a later age.
Mr. Duggar was caught with his hand in the cookie jar. He’s not the first or last that will be caught in sin.

I found his statement about this latest scandal.

I have been the biggest hypocrite ever. While espousing faith and family values, I have secretly over the last several years been viewing pornography on the internet and this became a secret addiction and I became unfaithful to my wife.
I am so ashamed of the double life that I have been living and am grieved for the hurt, pain and disgrace my sin has caused my wife and family, and most of all Jesus and all those who profess faith in Him.
I brought hurt and a reproach to my family, close friends and the fans of our show with my actions that happened when I was 14-15 years old, and now I have re-broken their trust.
The last few years, while publicly stating I was fighting against immorality in our country, I was hiding my own personal failings.
As I am learning the hard way, we have the freedom to choose to our actions, but we do not get to choose our consequences. I deeply regret all hurt I have caused so many by being such a bad example.
I humbly ask for your forgiveness. Please pray for my precious wife Anna and our family during this time.

As I said, he’s not the first to get caught in sin. The Bible is full of stories of those that admitted “I have sinned!”

And Pharaoh sent and called for Moses and Aaron, and said to them, “I have sinned this time. The Lord is righteous, and my people and I are wicked. Entreat the Lord, that there may be no more mighty thundering and hail, for it is enough. I will let you go, and you shall stay no longer.” Ex 9:27-28

But Pharaoh did not let the people go so he compounded his admission with a lie. The end result was the destruction of Egypt.

And Balaam said to the Angel of the Lord, “I have sinned, for I did not know You stood in the way against me. Now therefore, if it displeases You, I will turn back.” Num 22:34

Balaam admitted to sinning. He did not lie or offer an excuse. He did offer to turn around and go home if that is what God wanted. He lived to complete God’s task for him.

And Achan answered Joshua and said, “Indeed I have sinned against the Lord God of Israel, and this is what I have done: When I saw among the spoils a beautiful Babylonian garment, two hundred shekels of silver, and a wedge of gold weighing fifty shekels, I coveted them and took them. And there they are, hidden in the earth in the midst of my tent, with the silver under it.” Josh 7:20-21

Achan admitted to sinning by taking from Jericho what God had directly said not to take. He then attempted to explain it away as “ I saw the stuff and just couldn’t help myself!” He and his family died as a punishment to every one.

Then Saul said to Samuel, “I have sinned, for I have transgressed the commandment of the Lord and your words, because I feared the people and obeyed their voice. Now therefore, please pardon my sin, and return with me, that I may worship the Lord.” 1 Sam 15:24-25

King Saul also sinned by disobeying God. He was told to utterly destroy a nation of people called the Amelekites. But Saul brought back the king and lots of animals. His reasoning (excuse) was to offer the animals as sacrifice to the Lord – a noble idea but that is not what God had commanded.
The kingship was stripped from King Saul and he lived a pretty long life. Eventually he died at the hand of the enemy.

So David said to Nathan, “I have sinned against the Lord.” 2 Sam 12:13

David also sinned. He committed adultery and murder. A closer examination of the events can lead you to see that he broke all ten commandments during this time.
David’s sin was forgiven and he went on as king. But where there is sin there is death. And death came upon David’s family.
But David did not lie about his sin. He did not offer excuse about his sin. Although caught with his hand in the cookie jar, he admitted “I have sinned against the Lord!”

And so it is with anyone that comes to the Lord Jesus and confesses sin. If only Mr. Duggar had followed another Bible verse and got help.

Confess your trespasses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much. James 5:16

And so should you and I!
