Back to Basics

Article VI, Paragraph III of the U. S. Constitution says in the last sentence – but no religious Test shall ever be required as a Qualification to any Office or public Trust under the United States.

You may have heard this quoted recently after presidential hopeful Ben Carson’s remark that no Muslim should be President.
Although he later said that a clearer statement would be a Muslim that would uphold Sharia law over the U. S. Constitution.

Though it may say this in the founding document, I think most voters pay some attention to the religious affiliation of candidates.

A look at the past presidents shows there were four Baptists, eleven Episcopalian’s, seven Presbyterian’s, three Methodist’s, some Unitarian’s, Quaker’s, and Congregationalist’s.
For the most part, through the years, the voters elected a WASP for the high office. A WASP being a White, Anglo-Saxon, Protestant!
It wasn’t until the 1960’s that a Catholic was elected in the person of John Kennedy.

I think the American voter uses many “tests” before each one pulls the lever.

Unlike the Constitution, the Bible does give a test for someone that desires the office of a pastor.

This is a faithful saying: If a man desires the position of a bishop, he desires a good work. A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, temperate, sober-minded, of good behavior, hospitable, able to teach; not given to wine, not violent, not greedy for money, but gentle, not quarrelsome, not covetous; one who rules his own house well, having his children in submission with all reverence (for if a man does not know how to rule his own house, how will he take care of the church of God?); not a novice, lest being puffed up with pride he fall into the same condemnation as the devil. Moreover he must have a good testimony among those who are outside, lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil. 1 Tim 3:1-7

There are many churches and, therefore, many pastor’s that have ignored the instruction given in Timothy and Titus.

If we ignore the scripture concerning pastor’s and church leaders, then we will find ourselves ignoring other sections of the Bible, which is exactly what is happening today.

Time to return to basics of the Bible.
