Accent on the Word of God

Although I wasn’t raised in East Texas, I was raised by my mom, who was an East Texan. As a result I have an accent, not as severe as some in the area but I have it none the less.

There are many others with accents too; those of European decent, Yankee’s, Southerner’s, and immigrants from south of the border.
Each group has its own distinct way of saying different things and has a vocabulary of their own words.
The late Steve Irwin gave a glimpse into Australian lingo while comedian Jeff Foxworthy demonstrated southern redneck phrases.

Even in the Bible there is scripture that indicates people were recognized by their accent.

Peter is a great example.

And a little later those who stood by said to Peter again, “Surely you are one of them; for you are a Galilean, and your speech shows it.” Mark 14:70

Galilean’s were the back woods rednecks of Israel. They would have made great East Texan’s because many of them were fishermen.
It was Peter’s accent and dialect betrayed who he was.

Several weeks later the Galilean’s speech is noticed again. This time on the Day of Pentecost.

And when this sound occurred, the multitude came together, and were confused, because everyone heard them speak in his own language. Then they were all amazed and marveled, saying to one another, “Look, are not all these who speak Galileans?” Acts 2:6-7

But Peter, standing up with the eleven, raised his voice and said to them, “Men of Judea and all who dwell in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and heed my words. Acts 2:14

It was a back woods Galilean that stood and proclaimed the word of God. God used him just the way he was to reach people from all over the world.

Some of the most well known preachers on TV and radio have accents. Michael Youseff is Egyptian. Alistair Begg is Scottish. And Dr. Tony Evans lives in the Dallas area but has a slight speech impediment.

No matter how you talk – God can use you.
The language of Christ’s love has no accent!
The language of salvation has no dialect.
The language of forgiveness has no ethnic phrases.
Use your God given voice to proclaim what God has done!
