Rebuke Fables and Commandments of Men

People tell me what they believe. Some I will agree with and others I am disappointed they believe that way.
The most popular reason that I hear as to why someone accepts a belief is, “It just sounds right!”

For there are many insubordinate, both idle talkers and deceivers, especially those of the circumcision, whose mouths must be stopped, who subvert whole households, teaching things which they ought not, for the sake of dishonest gain. Titus 1:10-11

Not everyone that teaches God’s word has your best interest in heart. Some are in it for what they can get out of it.
Those that teach the truth will not build up themselves but the name of Jesus. All their work will point to and glorify Him.

In the case of Titus, who was on the Isle of Crete, Paul had these harsh words.

One of them, a prophet of their own, said, “Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, lazy gluttons.” This testimony is true. Therefore rebuke them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith, not giving heed to Jewish fables and commandments of men who turn from the truth. Titus 1:10-14

I had a man say to me once that Christians were the meanest people he has met. I had trouble debating his statement since I knew what he meant.
I’m sure you’ve heard many Christians called hypocritical.

Mean and hypocritical are not “sound in the faith”. Mean and hypocritical are the fruits of listening to the wrong stuff!

Christian teaching does have its share of fables and commandments of men. But this Christian teaching isn’t true to the message and meaning of Christ and the Bible. Any time some evangelist, preacher, teacher has a new revelation from God or some new enlightenment and it contradicts the word of God, then it is a false teaching.
Such teachers need to be sharply rebuked!
The one that rebukes must know the truth of God’s word and use it to do the rebuking. Anything less would be fables and commandments of men.

  1. Amen! The only way we can expose the lies and express the truth is to know Christ’s Word the Bible inside out by purposeful continual reading and study relying upon the work of the Holy Spirit, the Author of the Bible, in our hearts and minds so we can then rightly divide and apply the Word of truth to God’s glory. Amen!
