So after forty years of wandering in the wilderness the people of Israel entered the land God had promised.
Num 26:51 says those who were numbered of the children of Israel: six hundred and one thousand seven hundred and thirty. (601,730)
This number includes those men over twenty-one that were able to “go to war”.
It excludes all women and children. If each man had a wife then the census is automatically 1,202,460. Consider if each couple had one child that would make the count 1,805,190, but most couples had multiple children at that time.
So you’re safely looking at a population of at least two million.
So they attack and win over Jericho but an evil was done in that one individual took some spoils of war for himself – one out of millions!
This sin was unknown to the leadership of Israel and their next conquest failed because of it.
God told Joshua the people had sinned.
So Joshua rose early in the morning and brought Israel by their tribes, and the tribe of Judah was taken. He brought the clan of Judah, and he took the family of the Zarhites; and he brought the family of the Zarhites man by man, and Zabdi was taken. Then he brought his household man by man, and Achan the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, was taken. Josh 7:16-18
Out of two million people the exact person that had stole the goods and caused the trouble was found.
You can’t hide from God.
