Ashes to ashes – dust to dust.

For dust you are, And to dust you shall return. Gen 3:19

I was recently asked what the Bible says about cremation. I remember being told by someone the Bible said a person that is cremated would go to hell. I can tell you that’s not in the Bible!

Abraham buried Sarah his wife in the cave of the field of Machpelah (Gen 23:19) but that sounds more like a tomb rather than being lowered in the ground like today.
That being said, many old tomb burials have been discovered with the dead buried in shallow graves in the dirt floor of the tomb.

In the book of Joshua you’ll read where a man took some forbidden things from Jericho. This “sin” caused the defeat of Israel against a much smaller adversary.
The guilty party was found and punished.
So all Israel stoned him with stones; and they burned them with fire after they had stoned them with stones. Josh 7:25
It seems that this was more a punishment than a burial ritual. The remains of Achan and family were totally obliterated. There was no grave for anyone to memorialize.

Some have said a cremated body cannot be resurrected. What about those Christian’s burned at the stake. Or someone attacked and consumed by a shark or crocodile. Do you think God can resurrect those bodies?
As the first scripture indicates – to dust you shall return. I’m certain the patriarch’s, King David, Daniel, John the Baptist, and the Apostle Paul have long since become dust.
God will resurrect them all and give each a new body.
If God can resurrect a body from dust I’m sure He can from ashes.

The Bible is silent on the subject – neither condoning or condemning the practice. But before you make a decision of cremation or burial, please talk it over with those you leave behind to do it. Some of them may have strong convictions.
