In those days there was no king in Israel; everyone did what was right in his own eyes. Judges 17:6; 21:25
Imagine a highway with no speed limit. It’s a rather smooth, straight road and I find myself driving 85 mph on it. Along the way, I’m passed up by someone doing over 100 mph. A few miles later I slam on the brakes because another person is driving 35 mph.
Three different drivers doing three different speeds – who is right?
All of us are because there is no speed limit. Each of us do what is right in our own eyes!
The creation of rules, laws, and statutes show freedom, restrictions, and the boundaries between the two.
Rules, laws, and statutes are only good if followed or enforced. Violators exist on both beyond the boundaries even with posted maximum and minimum speed limit signs on a highway.
We have laws against murder but it still happens. We have enforcement of murder laws and it still happens. We have penalties for committing murder and it still happens.
Words written showing the boundaries do little good without adherence to those words.
But the Holy Spirit also witnesses to us; for after He had said before, “This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, says the Lord: I will put My laws into their hearts, and in their minds I will write them,” then He adds, “Their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no more.” Heb 10:15-18
When you accept Jesus as your Savior, He writes His law into your heart and mind. His desire becomes your desire. His nature becomes your nature. You begin looking at sin differently and eliminating it your life in order to become more like Christ.
