Ecclesiastes 1:2
“Vanity of vanities,” says the Preacher;
“Vanity of vanities, all is vanity.”
These words define the entire Book of Ecclesiastes. As I read through the book, I’m not certain how many verses are stuck in my memory.
What does remain in my brain are the many “tests” Solomon performed to discover all the vanities of life.
At first, I want to say today’s verse was written last and placed at the beginning once rest of the book was completed.
Then again, perhaps he made this bold statement and set forth to prove it right.
I’m sure many people would love to take their own test of such things.
Would they discover what Solomon discovered?
Unknown!
I know illegal drugs leads to a wasteful life, yet many try it seeking fun and fall victim to its grasp, not having the wisdom to see the danger of it.
I remember my first cigarette. I stole a camel from my future step-dad. I hid behind his apartment building and lit up.
Of course, I coughed and hacked at the first puff. However, I saw the vanity of smoking. I could not figure out the purpose of inhaling smoke and exhaling smoke. It made no sense. It has no purpose.
I don’t recall off hand if Solomon tried smoking anything. I’ll find out as I read through the book.
I will find out that his wisdom is infallible and his hypothesis is right.
