2 Thessalonians 3:10 If anyone will not work, neither shall he eat.
I always think of those on some sort of welfare type assistance when I read this verse.
Welfare is okay to help someone in a tough bind but it should never become the sole means of support for anyone.
There is an old saying that isn’t in the Bible but goes along with it – give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.
As pastor of a church, our church is often called upon in a charitable way.
Believe me when I say many con-artists and scammers are out there.
I have caught a few in lies and confronted them.
Suddenly I was the bad guy for questioning their lying motives.
I know of one church that wants ID to do a background check.
Many stopping by to ask for money quickly decide to move on.
A few times someone has stopped by and asked if we had anything to do around the church in trade for some financial help. Those are the ones I admire the most. They don’t want a handout, they want a job.
The Bible is not against charity and neither am I.
But the Bible and I are both against laziness.
I think any good and lawful work is honorable.
