Giving to Others – Giving to God

Last night was the Community Impact Awards – honoring the most outstanding Business, Non-Profit, Philanthropist, and Volunteer from the area.
Let me share a bit about one recipient – Reverend Bettie Kennedy.
It was a complete surprise to her when her name was called out and she made her way to the podium.
She accepted the award with grace, humility, and a few tears.
At 80 years old, Bettie’s giving started at a very young age.
She recounted a story of being a young girl and saving her allowance of 35¢ a week until she could buy some fresh fruit for a man that couldn’t walk.
Though she didn’t mention her age but I’ve done some math to put it in perspective.
Mrs. Kennedy was born around 1931.
Had she saved her money at the age of 15 it would have been 1946 and WWII had just ended.
Here are the prices of a few things.
Car: $1,400
Gasoline: 21 cents/gal
House: $12,500
Bread: 10 cents/loaf
Milk: 70 cents/gal
Postage Stamp: 3 cents
Average Annual Salary: $3,150
Minimum Wage: 40 cents per hour
But if Bettie was any younger, it will put her in war time.
Either way I was impressed at her giving nature at such a young age and such uncertain times.
But she gives in more ways than this; she gives glory to God for it all.
Give to the LORD the glory due His name; Bring an offering, and come into His courts. Ps 96:8
I don’t know the affect Bettie had on that man; but it had to be one where he felt noticed and loved; that he wasn’t forgotten by everyone.
The greatest glory to God is not each of us standing around, raising our hands, and saying “Praise the Lord!”
The greatest act of giving is with each other; then the King will say to those on the right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the Kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. For I was hungry, and you fed me. I was thirsty, and you gave me a drink. I was a stranger, and you invited me into your home. I was naked, and you gave me clothing. I was sick, and you cared for me. I was in prison, and you visited me.’
“Then these righteous ones will reply, ‘Lord, when did we ever see you hungry and feed you? Or thirsty and give you something to drink? Or a stranger and show you hospitality? Or naked and give you clothing? When did we ever see you sick or in prison, and visit you?’ And the King will tell them, ‘I assure you, when you did it to one of the least of these my brothers and sisters, you were doing it to me!’ Matt 25:34-40 NLT
Glorify God today – give to someone else!
