Sometimes you need a sign, some sort of confirmation on what you believe God has told you.
You need some scripture or a prophecy from someone you trust that speaks to your heart about the things God has laid on your heart.
Maybe such was the case with Mary.
The angel tells her she’s going to give birth to Messiah. She accepts that but after a good night’s sleep or a day or two later it seems more like a dream; you begin to wonder if it was all true.
For Mary there was only one thing to do. A visit to Elizabeth would surely help since the angel said she was also expecting a baby.
A few days later Mary hurried to the hill country of Judea, to the town where Zechariah lived. She entered the house and greeted Elizabeth. Luke 1:39-40
Think about Zechariah and Elizabeth. They are pretty much in the same place as Mary. It’s been 6 months since his encounter with the angel and his wife is with child but was it all real. Elizabeth may not know everything that happen that day in the Temple, since her husband is still unable to talk.
And if he did write it all down for her, it’s still hard to believe.
Add to it all, she is 6 months pregnant and the baby has never moved.
At the sound of Mary’s greeting, Elizabeth’s child leaped within her, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. Luke 1:41
Enter Mary; she is here to confirm her own doubt and fear.
As soon as she speaks, Elizabeth’s unborn son moves – he leaps inside her and she is filled with the Holy Spirit. She is immediately blessed and filled with such great joy and relief. Her own fear and doubt disappear as she speaks blessing and encouragement to young Mary.
Elizabeth gave a glad cry and exclaimed to Mary, “God has blessed you above all women, and your child is blessed. Why am I so honored, that the mother of my Lord should visit me? When I heard your greeting, the baby in my womb jumped for joy. You are blessed because you believed that the Lord would do what he said.” Luke 1:42-45
Mary went to for confirmation and to get a blessing but Mary is the one who gave the confirmation and blessing.
Such is the way with God!
