God’s direction or People’s advice?

adviceDo you ever get unwanted advice from anyone? They just offer their opinion on what they think you should do!
I know some people who will tell you how, when, and where you should do it. They will explain how they did it or that they tried it your way and it won’t work.
There is always someone that’s going to offer their free, unsolicited advice!

It happens in ministry too. I have had well-intentioned people tell me what I need to preach on and how long I should preach. I’ve been advised on subjects to avoid and people I should not talk to.

When it was time for Elizabeth to give birth, she gave birth to a son. Of course you already knew she would.
All of her neighbors were so happy for her and, being a first time mom, I’m sure the other more experienced mom’s had plenty of advice.

When the baby was eight days old, they all came for the circumcision ceremony. They wanted to name him Zechariah, after his father. But Elizabeth said, “No! His name is John!”
“What?” they exclaimed. “There is no one in all your family by that name.” Luke 1:59-61

The neighbors had good intentions and thought that Zechariah Jr. was a fitting name for the newborn. But Elizabeth would not have it; after all, she knows he has a divinely appointed name – John!
To the neighbors that did not make sense. There were no John’s in the family and they insisted on Junior!

Elizabeth would not relent, so they used gestures to ask the baby’s father what he wanted to name him. He motioned for a writing tablet, and to everyone’s surprise he wrote, “His name is John.” Instantly Zechariah could speak again, and he began praising God. Luke 1:62-64

By obeying God’s will in their lives, Zechariah’s experienced the awesome majesty of God as his speech returned and he began praising Him.

As the Apostle Peter would say many years later, “We ought to obey God rather than men.” Acts 5:29
Of course that isn’t to say that God cannot direct your life through another person.

Whichever means it happens, when you obey God’s will for your life, you will also begin experiencing the power and majesty of God. You will feel His presence in your life directing you in all ways. The Holy Spirit will fill you with joy and peace.
This is not only for your benefit.
As in the case of Zechariah, awe fell upon the whole neighborhood, and the news of what had happened spread throughout the Judean hills. Everyone who heard about it reflected on these events and asked, “What will this child turn out to be?” For the hand of the Lord was surely upon him in a special way. Luke 1:65-66

  1. We need to take the advice of others with a grain of salt until we check it against what God’s will for us is. Sometimes it is their will and sometimes God uses others to speak to us. The only way to know is to seek Him!

  3. In high school a few girls would do as I did seeing how it worked for me. It only got them deeper into trouble. Jesus is the only answer in life that is apporperat for
    everyone.
