Law of Moses 102 – A Christian Perspective

no seafoodThe Law of Moses seems like it is quite restrictive but it only is restrictive when it comes to sin.
For instance God said in the Law, “Of all the marine animals, these are ones you may use for food. You may eat anything from the water if it has both fins and scales, whether taken from salt water or from streams. But you must never eat animals from the sea or from rivers that do not have both fins and scales.” Lev 11:9-10
If you are like me, you wouldn’t be a happy camper as an Israelite under the Law.

That little bit would keep you from eating shrimp, crab, lobster, oysters, scallops, clams, crawfish (sorry Cajuns), and probably catfish.
And totally forget about bacon wrapped shrimp. Bacon got the kebosh earlier.

You may be thinking that God was being mean – after all, He just threw out the seafood buffet at the restaurant.
But God was actually protecting His people.
Without proper handling, canning, preserving, or refridgeration many of those foods can become poisonous and harmful.
To eat these things became sin.

So is it sinful to eat them today. Under the Law it is but I do not believe we are under the Law but under grace.

For sin shall not have dominion over you, for you are not under law but under grace. What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace? Certainly not! Rom 6:14-15

Grace is undeserved mercy. Getting what you don’t deserve and deserving what you don’t get.
It is also written that in the last days there will be those commanding to abstain from foods which God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth. For every creature of God is good, and nothing is to be refused if it is received with thanksgiving; for it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer. 1 Tim 4:3-5

So prayer is a key to receiving things and sanctifying it.
Now, I’ll be honest. If someone doesn’t want to eat bacon or shrimp, I’m not going to worry about it. And if someone wants to eat snails, I’ll pass on that but I’m not going to worry about it.

Now I will be the first to admit that a pig is not the cleanest animal in the world. That is why it is an unclean animal.
And some of those bottom dwellers in the sea are feasting on what other fish drop.

But here is a word of advice, let no one judge you in food or in drink, or regarding a festival or a new moon or sabbaths, which are a shadow of things to come, but the substance is of Christ. Col 2:16
