Do you not know that those who run in a race all run, but one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may obtain it. 1 Cor 9:24
That is so true. When a race it won you hand out a 1st place prize. Sometimes 2nd and 3rd are also given, especially in Olympic competition.
I have a friend, Jennifer, who likes to run. She started two years ago running during her lunch hour and slowly built up endurance and distance.
Then she ran a marathon – that’s 26 miles! And she finished!
She did not come in first place but I didn’t care, I was impressed that she ran and finished a marathon.
The other day I saw two women running south of Lufkin and as I drove by I noticed it was her. She was helping the other girl train for her first marathon. That day they rain 16 miles!
I believe, in Christ, each of us is in a race but we are not competing with each other. The competition is within each individual.
The marathon runner’s worse enemy is not the other runners! It is the fight between the body, that screams “Enough! Stop” and the mind, which says, “Keep going! You can do this!”
So in Christ there is the battle in each person – the fight to press on or quit.
Paul would continue to talk about each person obtaining a crown and the discipline needed to keep going.
Push through today! Keep going! Let’s finish this!
