When you make a vow to God, do not delay to pay it; for He has no pleasure in fools.
Pay what you have vowed — better not to vow than to vow and not pay. Eccl 5:4-5
Roy is a godly man.
One Sunday last year, the church had nearly every seat filled. Seeing the near capacity crowd, Roy made the statement that if we filled every seat he would cut his hair; and let me tell you he had a head full!
Then it happened two weeks ago as the church filled up to the point that we had to get extra chairs for the Resurrection Sunday crowd!
Yesterday, Roy brought hair clippers and allowed me to cut off his hair down to perhaps ½ inch.
Doug and John are godly men. Though neither made a vow, they believe in Proverbs 27:17 – as iron sharpens iron, so a man sharpens the countenance of his friend.
Both joined Roy and let me cut off their full heads of hair down to ½ inch.
Roy often quoted the verse from Ecclesiastes. I offered him an out saying he owed the church nothing and did not need to do this thing. But Roy said he made the vow to God.
How many do you know that make a vow to God and do not keep it?
“Lord, if you’ll heal momma, I’ll start going to church!”
“God, if you help me get Sharon as my girlfriend, I’ll read the Bible!”
“Do you promise to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth – so help you God?”
“I promise to love, honor, and cherish til death do us part!”
Above all, my brethren, do not swear, either by heaven or by earth or with any other oath. But let your “Yes” be “Yes,” and your “No,” “No,” lest you fall into judgment. James 5:12
