Then one of the criminals who were hanged blasphemed Him, saying, “If You are the Christ, save Yourself and us.” Luke 23:39

Definition of BLASPHEMY plural blasphemies
1a :the act of insulting or showing contempt or lack of reverence for God
b :the act of claiming the attributes of a deity
2:irreverence toward something considered sacred or inviolable

I have often thought of blasphemy as taking the Lord God’s name in vain. Certainly it is part of it.
Today’s scripture caught my attention and has me thinking about it.
One of the crucified men with Jesus blasphemed Him. The man doubted Who He is and what He can do.
Jesus said, “Therefore I say to you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven men.” Matt 12:31
The sin of blasphemy finds its roots in unbelief.
Unbelief is a killer, for without it one cannot seek nor ask forgiveness since one does not believe.
For this reason he who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit never has forgiveness, but is subject to eternal condemnation Mark 3:29
The person never has forgiveness because that person never asked for forgiveness seeing that person does not believe.
It is written those who passed by blasphemed Him, wagging their heads and saying, “You who destroy the temple and build it in three days, save Yourself! If You are the Son of God, come down from the cross.” Matt 27:39-40
In both instances those around Jesus doubted His claim of Savior and Messiah. The latter scripture indicates those around also doubted His abilities.
Do we blaspheme God by doubting His claims and His abilities?
Do we blaspheme when we think God cannot do this or that?
When we do not believe in the abilities of God, we blaspheme. When we demonstrate contempt and lack of reverence toward God, we blaspheme.
